what sex and what happened to this bird

what sex is this bird? how do you tell?

either another male or another female pecked the feathers and skin right off this one's head. i culled it, obviously.
 
No way to sex without vent shots, as this isn't a sex link variety.

As for the COD, I would say s/he got attacked by his cagemates. Which makes me think it was a he, and it kinda looks like a he.

My site (whitehousequail.com) has an article on it, it should explain everything you need to know. No pictures, as it's hard to palpate a vent, hold a a bird, and hold a DSLR, and snap a clear pic with two hands.

sexing quail -

very easy. there is a bump distal to the vent. push on it and foam exudes from males. males only have this bump (gland)
 
JJMR794 is rigth, i bougth 2 "hens" once, now they are my breeding males..
