I have three Ameraucana, about 12 weeks old. No crowing yet, and I still don’t know their sexes. All we’re supposed to be BBS. I also don’t know what color the lightest bird is. Thoughts?

1 I'm not sure. The comb is kind of red, but still really small. Could you post a photo of the whole bird?

2 and 3 are cockerels

4 is a pullet.
Thank you. I wish I had some good pictures, but I really don’t and I’m away from them for a couple weeks. If there’s no crowing by the time I return I will definitely take some whole bird pictures to post.

The pictures of a single black bird is the one most in question. (Thanks to my bird sitter for some pics!)
The picture with two black birds- the back one is nearly certainly a rooster. The foreground one whose head isn’t visible is the same bird as the other two pictures. It has a red peacomb but not as big as the roo.

Female

1 is probably a cockerel with that red comb.

2 and 3 are definitely cockerels.

4 is a pullet. Her color is blue splash.
Now I know: #1 and #2 are both black roosters. #3 and #4 are the same bird(sorry for the confusion) who is a splash hen. All three are super friendly and make me love chickens.
Thanks for your early response. I really wanted to hatch a black Ameraucana hen (I had one get killed by a hawk 😭 and had been trying to replace her) but here it didn’t happen.

If interested -

BBS is short for Blue, Black, Splash.
Blue is a dilution of black (1 copy blue dilution)
Splash is 2 copies of blue dilution, one from each parent

Crossing the colors together, you can get any of the colors

(this part doesn't matter which is rooster and which is hen)

Black x Blue = % black offspring, % blue offspring

Black x Splash = all blue offspring

Blue x Blue = %blue, %black, %splash

Blue x Splash = % blue, % splash

Splash x Splash = all splash offspring (I've heard splash can get lighter in this pairing)

Thanks. Yes, I have a much better understanding of this now than I did last year. For instance, I have a BBS Ameraucana hen, named “Bluey”… who is actually Splash. 🤦‍♀️ We learn.
