What should a high quality silkie roo be like? *Pics update*

Yup, that's leakage in the hackles. Really, it's generally bad genes. I'm sure someone can give a more specific answer. His wing also looks a little funky to me?

LEakage in hte hackles is caused by a lack of melanizers (whicih would add more black pigment to the plumage, and extend it into those areas). His comb looks more like a modified rose comb than like a true walnut comb; its size is fine. I really cannot tell about the wing, based upon the photo angles. Too many hard feathers in his tail.

If he is a sweetheart of a bird, use him in showmanship, but the hackles will cause him to be DQed in exhibition. If you really want to breed him, try to find a super typey, long and soft feathered grey girl for him.

It's not bad genes... I can go pull some really typey roos from my cull pen who are brothers to pullets and roos in my show pens. Leakage happens, and I think most breeders are still working on it. HOWEVER, unless he was the best roo I could get my hands on I wouldn't use him. If he is, well then, note his faults (comb, leakage, possibly wing, also... how much middle toe feather??) and match him up accordingly.

I don't think it's bad genes because he's perfect in my eyes. And he is extremely pretty.
I'm fine with the way he is. Judges can kiss Skippy's cloaca if they don't like him!
His wing? Whats on his wing?? I know that some of his feather feathers are stringy and "falling apart" in a way. But he's still healthy and I don't know about breeding. I don't have an incubator and the chances are I wouldn't be able to keep a young silkie or two around. The largefowl might confuse it for a finch because they eat finches, other small birds, and mice.
It's all about fun not serious showing.

I didn't buy from a hatchery.. Who says he's not pretty?

We sometimes buy from animal auctions or home based ranches. Or just regular chicken people.

I would not choose to pair a leaky female with a non-leaky male. Since he is clear, I would pair him with a clear blacl or blue hen,

I said grey becasue he is silver; most silkies are e^b based and so all that is missing from grey is Pg. If you find a grey hen, chances are he offspring will inherit Pg from her and have incomplete penciling. Next generation ou can select for those with the best penciling.
