I am starting a Urban Homestead and am having trouble deciding what animals I should get. I am definitely getting chicken but these are the other animals I want Quail, pigeons, goats, rabbits, an emu and a pig. Obviously I can't get all these animals right now. I will start facility constructions in a couple weeks hopefully but nothing can be built till I settle on animals. What animals would you recommend? What are pros and cons? Also any advice would be helpful.

Thanks for your time

Ducks are lovely animals but are extremely messy. If you're planning on free ranging everyone then Drakes can be a problem with hens.

Actually if you are new to all of this, I suggest getting one kind of animal at a time. Once you think things are going okay, then add something else. If you just get different animals at once you will end up quite overwhelmed and ready to ditch the whole idea. Really there are no shoulds, it isn't written in stone. Get what animals you would like to have but, learn about one before adding another.

I'm pretty experienced with animals, I'm pretty sure I won't be overwhelmed.

Greetings from Kansas, Pacey Hillson, and :welcome. Great to have you in our community! I started with chickens...added ducks the next year, turkeys the year after. This year it's all of the above plus guinea fowl, geese, and turkeys. I'd not recommend all of them at once but whatever you decide, best wishes and thanks for joining BYC! :)
