What should I do about the pond edge?!

We have a decent size pond in our back yard that I plan on letting the ducks free range by. (we're placing their coop near it.) But the only thing is the edge of the pond drops down about 2ft before it's actual water. I dug kind of like a trench into the pond so it's not as steep of a drop, I'm just afraid they won't be able to get in and out as they please. Has anyone had this problem or know of any ideas I could do to make it more duck friendly!

They'll be outside duckers in only a couple weeks!

I have an open pond and once my ducklings are fully feathered they will be free ranged. While there are some steep sides, the wild mallards don't seem to have difficulty with it. Since you built a trenched out area, I would place smooth river stones with sand along the edge. The stones will help them grip for the incline and the sand will keep the mud to a minimun.

Our mallards sort of hop on to the edge of the pond.

We made our ducks a "pond" more like a deep puddle but it has a foot drop on all sides and they would not go in at all until we put the water up to basically level with the ground.

What sort of ducks do you have ??

If they are 'scovies ,any breed of bantam duck ,or perhaps a light breed of duck ,they can probably just fly in and out of the pond.
