Help I have a broody who was sitting on 12 eggs but due to one thing and another is down to 6. On day 18 she managed to break an egg with a fully formed chick in there the smell was awful and the mess was all in the nest. I took the eggs out very carefully changed the stinky nest and washed the eggs in warm water (taking great care not to chill or damage the eggs) . She is now on day 22 I candled the eggs I am not sure if they are moving or not? The are all dark and appear developed but there have been no chirps or anything from any of the eggs. I am starting to get worried she's sitting on dead eggs. What should I do?

Sometimes chickens will sit an extra day or two if their eggs haven't hatched just to make sure they are not alive. IN their minds, if it doesn't hatch like 3 days after it's due date she will come to realize that they're dead and abandon them anyway. Give her a couple days to realize they're not going to hatch I'm positive that she will abandon them soon. If she reaches day 25 and hasn't given up then just remove the eggs while she's eating/drinking and is away from her nest. By doing this you will also, hopefully, stop her being broody and she'll resume laying eggs not trying to hatch dead ones.

Thanks so much for you advice. I will leave her for a couple of days and see what happens. I did also do the water test 3 floaters 3 sinkers although none of the eggs moved. This is the third time this hen has gone broody. I have managed to break her broody ness in the passed but decided to let her sit this time . I may get some day old chicks for her if none hatch. Fathers crossed she gets one baby at least .
