What should I do? Sweet buff Orpington cockerel turns mean.

My Buff Orp roo was a jerk. He was fine with me, gave me a wide berth, either accepting that I was the alpha or was just waiting for me to be in a position of weakness before attacking, I don't know. But, even tho he was respecting me, he attacked my sister. IMO, A roo that attacks, even if he learns to respect you, he cant be trusted to give that respect to other people and other people aren't safe.
My leghorn has some fear of me, but occasionally tests it. But he has zero fear of my kids. We all carry sticks when we go out, for protection & general herding.

What in the world is so special about this rooster that he is worth keeping?
For the life of me I can't see a reason to keep a pet around if it meant my kids couldn't go outside without a stick for protection.

I truly would like to do the pick up and hold him way. I wanted to raise my chickens in a loving and sweet way so no one will get hurt. If he doesn't respond to this then I will have to remove him. I only wanted a few hens and not a rooster. But we became so close when he was a baby chick. I have some thinking to do....

I can't get on board with the rehabilitation or domination of an aggressive rooster.
Why even mess with it? These stories of carrying stuff around to prevent being attacked sounds crazy to me. why have something at you home that scares you or attacks you?
What is so valuable about one to put up with it.
Would you keep a dog that your kids needed a stick to keep it at bay? I doubt it.
Like the one poster said. Even if you do get control of it does that mean it won't attack your kids or a neighbor? And what if you do dominate it to submission then what do you have? A beat down hen pecked rooster? Would he be worth much then? Doubt he would protect his flock like he should. I mean know in his eyes your top rooster right.
What if you do get him straightened out? Will he stay that way or one day in the future decide its time to try to be on top again?.
A rooster can do real damage to you and extreme damage to a small child. A large fowl rooster can easily flog a small child in the face. This could result in the loss of an eye or worse.
Why risk that? Do people not understand what a good old flooging is? Do you not think a rooster can cause real damage to you?
I just don't get it.

I'm trying to get rid of him (and another roo). I ended up w 3 males out of 16. He was tolerable until our buff orpington turned out to be male. He's good w the females, and given the choice I'd keep him over the orpington bc of size.. The place I got him from told me all their chicks were females, seems the joke was on me. I also have a bantam roo who is a sorry excuse of a bird, size wise, but he's got attitude. I just can't bring myself to off either of them, but if someone takes them they're free to do what they like. In the future I'm only buying them a few months old.

I get what you're saying. I am new to the chicken and rooster world. So everyone's advice is great. What is best for me is to probably get rid of it. I will keep him til the other flock gets use to my only hen. I got the short end of the stick. Bought three hens and got 2 roosters out of it.

I bought 4 that I was assured were all female bc "that's what we order from our supplier".. Smh. I could handle 2 roos, but 3 is too many. I put an in our local paper hoping someone might take them.

Now my buff Orpington is squatting when I walk up to it. Crowing, then pecking and then squatting..... is it even a Roo? This is one confusing bird. Lol

Can you post a pic from the side? This is my orp roo. He's 18 weeks now (second pic)m I didn't realize he was a he until 2 weeks ago (first pic) when he started chasing my females. I had posted the pic and they said the saddle feathers were obvious & he was a cockerel.
