What should I do to prevent a muddy run?

I was using hay on the ground in the run to keep my girls' feet from getting muddy. But recently, I have suffered a major tragity. My girl's have been eating the hay which has been causing them much discomfort. Their poop has been very compacted and stays in one long peice - about the width of my pinkie finger and as much as 2 ft long! One of my girls, Kate, had a lot of trouble in which her cloaca prolasped! Needless to say she is no longer with us

This leads me to my question: What should I put on the ground in the run to prevent mud from forming when it rains?
