What should I do with my nest boxes until they are ready?

My birds are only 5 weeks old. Hopefully they will be leaving the laundry room this weekend

Should I put straw in my nesting boxes even though they are so young? Cover them up with fabric?

Some people cover them... I just put pine shavings in them and left them open. My chicks living outside are only about 7 weeks old, but I figured they could get used to having them there and know where they're at when they're ready. I can tell that no one ever ventures in them though, because I haven't found any poo in them

I would suggest that if the nest boxes are already in the coop with the birds that you block them. You don't want them to get in the habit of roosting in the nest boxes.

You can just stuff old feedbags in them, or jam some other object in such that the birds can't get in, and there ya go.

Have fun,

Pat

I just tacked some cardboard over the entrances to mine until they're needed. I've read on BYC that they can roost in the doorways and make a poopy mess otherwise. One less place to clean - for now . . .
