i found it in the yard yesterday morning and decided to leave it alone. then yesterday evening when i went to give the chickens their snack i noticed the baby bird had moved across the yard to the other side but was crying/chirping and i saw no signs of its parents. so i gathered it up, put together a small brooder, mixed up some gro-gel and thought i would just bring it inside for the night and feed it little and often.

this morning i put it outside in our blueberry patch and hoped it would have enough cover for protection from the local hawk and maybe it's crys would get the attention of it's parents.

well i just went outside again and there it was sitting in the wet grass crying. so i have it again and just fed it some chick feed ground up and mixed with water.

here is a video featuring the bird

do you have a wildlife rehab area of if you want to raise it until it can fly go to pet store and buy bird formula

yeah i will probably raise it till it can fly and let it go and hope for the best. i was just wondering if what i am doing/feeding is right.

whats up with the bird formula?

If you can, figure out what kind of bird it is and research what they eat. It looks vaguely familiar, but I don't know what it is. (The bird formula would probably work for now though.) If it eats bugs, try meal worms or even mashed, moistened cat food would be ok.
Good luck with the little one!

wild birds rarely live if you don't know how to care for them. I found one in my yard earlier in the spring. I had a hanging flower pot that I wasn't using, so I hung it up as high in a tree as I could get it. In the same area where I found him also. I put some straw in it to keep it warm, and put him in. Next day I went out to check and it was gone. I hope the parents somehow got it, never did find it on the ground. At any rate they could at least feed it and it would be safe.

It's feathered, so it would probably be cared for by its parents on the ground. Now that you've intervened, I'm not sure what the right thing is to do (the parents have probably given up by now).

Your best bet is to check with a wildlife rehabber in your area. You can google the words "wildlife rehabilitation" and your city to find contacts.

For future reference, if you find a chick that's feathered on the ground, its parents are probably nearby still caring for it. If the chick is in immediate danger from a predator (like a cat) try to put it someplace higher and out of the way, like on a nearby bush.

Perching birds like this one appears to be are altricial, hatching without feathers. If you find an unfeathered chick on the ground, by all means help it out because an unfeathered bird is too young to be out of the nest.

The rule for wild birds is to leave them where they are. It is likely the parents are in the area, unseen. As long as the cats arent' around of course. The parents will come and bring food. At least that's what they say. If you don't know what to do, that seems best.
If you insist chew up some worms and cooties and put them in it's mouth. It's an ugly bird anyways!
