I agree with the above. If you want to raise chicks, do it because you enjoy it and not for the money, because the ledgers very likely won't balance. And with chicks you are best sticking to one pure variety rather than mixing colors as purebred are more popular. Anyway, mixing lavender and buff will give you mostly black birds as two copies of the lavender gene are needed to make that color, and buffs have don't have that gene.
 
X2...there is a saying about horses that goes, "the best way to make a small fortune in horses is to start with a large fortune".....the same is true for poultry.
Buff Orpington are a fairly common breed, so unless one is turning out top of the line, exhibition quality hirds it's pretty well a glutted market. Some Orpington types are less common and more in demand, but even delving into the type du jour is unlikely to make you "a lot of money"

There is also a story about the farmer who won $500,000,000 in the lottery. When asked what he planed to do with the money he said, "Well, I recon I'll just keep on farming as long as the money holds out."
