What should I go to school for?

You need to do what you want to do! You're the only one who is going to be living your life-you need to make yourself happy first. I was in the exact same boat you are in now, and 12 years later am kicking myself in the butt for not being true to myself.

My husband and I own 4 horses and we love them to death-but I really wanted a career in the equine industry too. When I was in high school, I was researching colleges with equine programs, my father pitched a fit. "Horses-hah you'll never make any money doing that!" OOOOOhhhhhhhh

At the time, I wasn't strong enough to stand up on my own two feet and explore all of my options. I could've gone and checked out financial aid and all of that, but I wanted to please my father! I kick myself every day!! Not that I regret having married my husband and all of that jazz, but you know-you really only live once!

Even my own husband wishes I'd have stood up to him and made my own way! I love that man! lol In the end it boils down to you and what you want, your priorities and your goals in life. How much material things matter, your values, morals and principles all play a part in this decision. You've got some soul searching to do and I pray that you reach a decision that makes you happy and fills you with joy!

Research colleges with equine programs and talk to your counselors-that's what they're there for! You've got options that you're not even aware of yet, get the counselors working for you!! Use the internet, google equine colleges and programs. Get researching young lady!! lol God Bless and have fun!!

Well, what about waiting til they're all in school, and then try to get a job working in a barn during the daytime. By the time summer rolls around, you *might* be able to work out something w/r/t daycare, or might have gotten to the point where you can get paid at least enough to cover daycare or camp costs for the kids to allow you to keep working with horses.

Having kids does change one's options, though. Some doors close, others open, but it does change the playing field. Honestly I know very, very few people in the horse industry who entered the field (from the bottom) with kids... those with kids either had significant money to begin with, or were at a level where they were making enough to pay for care, or had family nearby willing to watch the kids for free.

If you can't get any of those approaches to work, perhaps it would be more useful to think of finding something else fulfilling to do with yourself and regard horses as a hobby, for the time being. And then if circumstances change in the future you will still have 'an oar in', so to speak

Good luck,

I got a Bachelors in Animal & Poultry Sciences with an Equine Science Emphasis at Virginia Tech. You can either specialize in Equine Science (for those interested in a veterinary field), Equine Biotechnology, or Equine Business. The curriculum is designed so that you can go into ANY equine field of interest once you graduate
