As any chicken owner knows within the first month, depending on the amount of chickens owned, any grass that is in the run or fence area, has a death sentence and will be destroyed in a matter of weeks. What makes a good bedding for a run?

What makes a good bedding for a run?

Anything and everything that is dry and will eventually rot. Wood chips are great, dry leaves are great (available in the fall), hay or straw is fine too.

Anything you would put in a compost pile can go in too--vegetable trimmings, weeds from the garden, etc. But you need enough dry things to avoid a wet stinky mess.
