I use a mixture of materials. We raise Bermuda hay, rotate winter wheat over our cotton ground, and have abundant amount of leaves that fall yearly. I toss the leaves and straw through a chopper to use in the coop with pine shavings. I use the hay in the nesting boxes. Hay can mold when it gets wet and doesn’t have good airflow it’s the only reason I just keep it in the boxes. Not that the others won’t but as I’ve gotten older I’ve gotten sensitive to moldy hay. You’d think being in they hayfields and barns since I could walk I’d be immune by now.
