After all the humidity we have been having, we decided we need to add some more vents to the coop. We want to add one vent above the nest boxes and one in the access door.
my question is, how big do you think the one in the door should be? My husband was originally going to make it the entire door but I felt maybe like 3/4 of it, that way shaving won’t be coming out the 1/2 in hardware cloth.
The one above the nest boxes will be the full width but we haven’t decided how high yet.

I'm not sure about the access door because the way the door is framed will dictate the design, but I suggest that you take the entire triangular section directly under the roof as venting over the nestboxes. Both heat and ammonia rise. :)

But given your northern location you'll probably want to give the vents some kind of cover to both keep rain out of the coop and allow adjustment during storms.

Both new vents will have panels for weather, maybe even plexiglass. We also currently have vents all the way around under the overhang. We wanted to create something for a cross breeze. But I see what you’re saying about under the roof due to heat and ammonia.

New vents are done! I think they turned out great. Went in a different direction with the door side, left the door alone and hubby decided to make the window above door a vent (that was my suggestion on construction day). What do you think of the finished product?
