I have 11 chicks and want to get a hanging plastic waterer very soon but I don't know how big of one to get. Right now they drink about a quart of water a day but I know that will increase as they're only getting bigger (they are 4.5 weeks old now). I'm assuming we could end up near a gallon of water per day so I was thinking a fairly smallish one should work. I don't plan on filling a waterer every day, but also don't plan on going longer than just a few days between washing it out and refilling. Would this one be sufficient for every other day refills through the summer (I live in WA and it doesn't get very hot very often)? I have an 11lb feeder that I should only need to fill twice a week once they're full grown, so I guess that would be ideal but not necessary for a waterer.
That would work just fine, it's very heavy when it's full, I have the 3 gallon one for my 7 laying hens +1 rooster. I have to replace it with fresh water every other day, but if it's hot outside, everyday.
Well I ended up back at the feed store today (I can't stay away, I'm such a newbie!
) and bought the 3gallon waterer. It seems to be working well with my chicks in the coop for now. They're big enough not to fall in the deeper trough and drown, and I won't have to refill it daily, just twice a week for now. I added ACV to it. I love getting more and more prepared for them to be "real" big chickens
