Hi, My names Connor, Im 17 and live in England. This is my first post on backyard chickens. I've recently decided on keeping chickens again after losing all of mine tragically then giving up the whole chicken keeping. I've decided on keeping either Black rocks, Rhode Island reds or Light Sussex this time as I used to be very much into game birds, E.g Ko Shamo and Old English game but Im purely looking for laying chickens now.

I used to have a 3 lovely slatted bottom, Wired top chicken runs but im unable to get the amount of wood needed this time round unfortunately. I've come across a picture of my desired chicken run but I could do with someone telling me what size (top to bottom) the mesh in the picture is?
I've also added 2 pictures of what I have to work with, The black lines draw out how far my plot is, by how far I'll be having myy run. Obviously I'm going to be removing most of the grass from what soon is the chicken pen, The bottom picture is the mesh Im looking for.

Thank you.

I looked at your link and zoomed to 400% and can't make out mesh size from pics. If you look at Chain Link dog kennel for size or 2 inch by 4 inch woven wire - that would work but, you should add 1 inch chicken wire attached to woven wire on the inside bottom 30 inches tall so, raccoons can't reach in and get ahold of a chicken. Hope this helps and Good Luck with new chickens!

Hi Fried Green Eggs, Thanks for the reply.

However, I mean how tall in the wire from top to bottom, I can never seem to find any chicken wire rolls thats over 1 metre in height, In which I really need, I would buy a couple of rolls and do the bottom half then the top half, But Im trying to keep things as tidy looking as possible.

What you need to do is measure the wire cloth openings....how many wires are there in the mesh per inch? How many openings per inch? Now get a caliper and measure the diameter of 1 wire.

Most likely you are looking at one of the standard measuring wire mesh materials which can be found in more detail here:

Next, what is the weave? Plain? Twilled? Use the site as a resource and categorize your wire mesh or wire cloth one attribute at a time. The next thing you will need to find out is if it is stainless steel. Put a magnet on the mesh - does it stick to the material?

Normal Chicken Wire is not very tough and tends to rust in a few years and not look so nice. You should be able to get a woven wire roll with small spacing in 4 foot tall and 6 feet tall rolls. I used the 6 foot tall woven wire and used tall wood post for corners and 8 foot tall steel t-post for line post. I used zip ties and attached 1 inch chicken wire to the inside bottom 30 inches tall. It looks nice and should last for many years and it's tall enough to walk in.
