A bare dirt floor would work well. You still use pine shavings, but the cleanup is easier. Plus, the litter will compost itself.

I am using 1/4" hardware cloth. The spaces are much smaller than 1/2" so walking on it is much more like walking on a solid surface. It will still allow the waste to fall through, and can be hosed off/out when needed.

You could use a droppings pit under the roosts with hardware cloth, and the rest just have a traditional floor.

I use the deep litter method with pine shavings and it's been wonderful! VERY little smell so far and I just add a little new every few weeks. I do shovel out under their roost area once a month and add totally new there. I go right in their coop (8X8) and can barely smell chickens at all. My niece who came over and does NOT like animals actually was amazed at how it didn't smell. LOL I go through one bag of pine shavings every two weeks (sometimes not even that much) and that is with having two brooders in the house as well. And my bag of shavings cost me 4 bucks for 3 cubic feet of it. I clean my two brooders and whats left gets dumped in my chicken coop at the end of the month.

anyone else?im open for suggestions
