I know it's in the Chicken for Dummies somewhere.... Just got 4, one-week-old chicks today. The bulb I have has warmed the brooder to 80 degrees- too cool? I can go out later and get a bigger bulb. thanks!

90F would be closer to what you need.

Are you measuring the temp at floor level?

How far above the floor is the light bulb?

Can you drop the light bulb lower to the floor?

the temp is at floor level, and I just checked it was 88. I would guesstimate that it's about 14 inches above, maybe 12? For now, it's as low as I can go, but hubby may be able to rig something.

My chicks are 4days old but seems like 90F is too hot for them.
I'm keeping around 83-85F and they look comfortable.
My great aunt who has farm and she has chicken said that's fine.
I guess all depend on chicken...
