what temp is too cold for chickens?

I too live in LA,, La crescenta to be exact...my chicks are in a 3/8 plywood coop, with vents on the top and one side open to the run. there is also a poop screen on the bottom of the coop that is open., my point is they have a draft.. they sit on a 2x4 perch every night and get up and lay every morning, last week when it was snowing i did cover the open side with some heavy rubber. its warm in there at night and they seem fine,,, although i do have 5 chickens, so they keep each other warm.
i get another chicken and cover the side of the rabbit hutch. they will be fine.

last year i was in Switzerland this time of year and it was cold, wet and snowing,,, the chickens were all out checking out the snow and seemed fine,.,,

Hello. I don't want to hijack your thread but I couldn't figure out how tonpost my own without tagging another member and I don't know anything about that!
My situation:
I have three girls in a fairly small coop. It is -28 degrees Celcius. I finally broke down and installed a heat lamp. But I find it VERY bright and keeping the coop almost too warm at 13 degrees Celsius in these temperatures.
If they are being kept this warm at night should I now keep the heat lamp on at all times until the temps get closer to zero or will they be okay with the changes when I turn the lamp off? And should I be concerned about the added light? (I had never intended to to add light increase daylight hours)
Thanks for any advice you may have for this newbie in subzero Ontario!

I live in Los Angeles and lately it has been in the low 40's at night. I have one chicken who lives in a rabbit coop at night. I have a travel dog kennel that I can put her in and bring her in the house if it is too cold. What temperature would be too cold for her?

I live a couple hours from you, Idyllwild Ca I am at 5300' above sea level. I have already seen temps below freezing and my coop is wide open (linked to left) I have about 75 sq ft of ventilation for 7 chickens and they are fine. You need more chickens! One chicken is a lonely life:(

Build a bigger chicken house, get a few more chickens!
