Hello everyone, I have loved chickens my whole life and have a soft spot for game fowl in particular I have so many good memories of going to cockfights with my family and it was a genuine good time with vendors selling all kinds of things and foods you would see alot of your friends there and go off playing with them we would like to go to were they disposed of the dying rosters and try to see which ones we could nurse back to health and we rescued quite a few that way, It was sort of a tradition back in the day in my little town near the Mexican border but those days are long gone and I have come to love my chickens so much so I can't even bring myself to dub my American and old English gamefowl, I MYSELF HAVEN'T AND WILL NEVER PARTICIPATE IN COCKFIGHTING OR ANY OTHER ILLEGAL ACTIVITY WITH MY CHICKENS this is just my story of how I came to love chickens.

Hi welcome to BYC. That’s sweet that you guys would nurse the roosters back to health. Do you have any chickens now?
Yes I have a asil x hatch rooster, a frost grey hen an ameraucana hen and I recently bought 25 chicks from mcMurray hatchery 13 black breasted red modern game (6 remaining) 6 Sumatra (all dead on arrival) and 6 dark Cornish (only 1 left) and 1 buff Cochin as the surprise chick (still alive) and I just received them on march 4th Im really hoping the remaining ones stay alive.

I change the sheets and pads daily but they sure make lots of mess for 8 chicks this is after about 3 hours of cleaning the brooder out, the Cochin likes to throw food out of the feeder with his big feathery feet. I will try to take better pics and pics of my cock and hens tmrw if I have time.

Your post is an example of why it's important to read ALL the way through before making judgements or responses. When you mentioned going to cock fighting and having fun, I nearly closed your post without finishing.

While I will never understand the inherent cruelty of forcing any animals -- birds, dogs, men vs. bulls in a ring, anything -- to fight and consider it human entertainment, I am glad that you personally did not participate and that you rescued some of the birds. Cultural and peer influences sometimes blind people to what they should be able to see as right (caring for other living creatures) and wrong (animal suffering).

Sorry to hear about the 6 Sumatra chicks. As far as your Cochin throwing food, I find all of my Cochins to be characters in one way or another. They are personality-plus chickens!

Welcome to BYC and best wishes for your flock!
