I occasionally get a hole like that in my yard and they are ant hills. I just throw some hot water on them and it breaks up the ant hills.

Take a small twig and stir the bottom of the hole gently and dont be surprised when a doodlebug appears!

I agree. I have a den in my sorghum and was wondering what it was because it's pretty decent size so I put up one of the game cameras pointed towards the den. It is a gopher tortoise. I have game cameras in different spots on my property and see plenty of predators most nights. It's still in the 90's here during the day so most come out at night to hunt.

I’ve seen squirrels and chipmunks do this.

Squirrels and chipmunks stick to ground holes typically around trees or landscaping, in pots, mulched areas, and lawn. The hole is typically bigger.

Check out link. Should show the antlion. I’m going to look for these also known as doodle bugs. I see the ants but typically not anything else.

Antlions are also known as Doodle Bugs there is even an old Folk Song about doodle bugs. Kneel down close to the pit and gently blow the sand away with your breath and you will find an insect larva at the bottom of the pit that is every ant's nightmare.

An alternative way is to drop a live ant into the pit and watch the sand at the bottom of the pit erupt as the doodle bug starts kicking sand into the face of the ant. Sooner or later the doodle bug in the bottom of the pit will snag the ant in its hollow jaws and drag her underground.
