Not silly at all, it took me a while to figure out chickens ears myself. if you gently pull down the little tuft of feather in the middle of the outer ear (the black tuft in the middle of the swelling on your chicken) you will find a hole to the inside of the ear. Easier said than done with some birds though.

Looks like it's abscessed. Looks like a scab at about 12:00 position on the swelling.
