What the heck is this????

There are people breeding the BCM with clean legs. With it being a hatchery bird, I would lean away from the BCM. The hatcheries are still only for the most part stocking Cuckoo Marans at this point.

looks like a clean legged BCM to me but if the person you got it from doesn't have any BCMs then it is likely a mix. But colors line up for a young BCM which do come clean legged. Feathered are refurred to as French BCMs or FBCM.
I do have a silky mix that is colored like a BCM, no idea what the other parent is but that's the color he came out.

My three roo's look very similar! But I have no idea what mine are either (I also think mutt). Two of mine have yellow legs though, and one has slate legs, and they've all got green iridescence to some degree.

I also got mine from Tractor Supply, but from the straight run bin. As chicks they looked like BSL except not a single one had a white dot on their head, but 3 outta 6 turned out to be roo's.

Is it possible he has a little Bantam in him? One of our neighbors has a bunch of Bantam's one Roo that I've seen so far and the coloring is very similar to you gorgeous boy... The body shape if definitely different than Banty up the road from me and I believe the leg color is off (I usually see the top half over the grass and weeds and am still a novice when it comes to anything about chickens). Just a thought really.
Hope you find out soon he is beautiful!

It's not a BCM! I just raised several BCM cockerels. There is no lacing in the hackle feathers like this boy has, and there should be more copper over the back and in the sickle feathers.

Our Roo Look almost identical to yours!!! We ordered pullets from our feed mill and 2 of the 4 "special" black sex links ended up boys. They said this is the first year they could "sex" them. They only get a 50%. LOL...

We named ours "Big Momma" until we found out shes is he!!! but we still call him " Big Momma" Kids don't call him anything else. I guess we could be giving him a complex.

We aren't going to keep ours since we told our neighbors we would NOT have a roo and ended up with 3. We are going to make some chicken soup soon!! They are getting quite noisy...And not so appreciated at 4:30 AM.

I am going to get Picts today and show you how close they look. I am going to guess it is a black sex link since that is what we ordered too!!! I am thinking they must not always look like barred rocks...

The coloring you can get by crossing a Gold Duckwing over a Wheaten or I believe a Partridge color rooster over a Wheaten hen would also give you that color also.
Now with that being said if some one would cross a Copper Black Maran with a Wheaten Maran it would be possible to produce that coloring.
Is the rooster in question still young (under a year old)?
If so then he will still grow out more of the Orange saddle feathers and wing bow..
