I always wonder why hens get dumped. Roosters are understandable since a lot of the counties don't allow them, but young pullets?
Our local Feedstore will take in any healthy chicken and rehome it for free as long as they have space in their cages. I stop there several times a week to see what they have.
I've walked away with 7 or 8 young healthy pullets. Last fall someone brought in 3 lovely BR pullets because they weren't laying. Well, they were barely 3 months old. I set up a friend with a tractor and the BR's started laying about a month later right on schedule.
