What time of day do they lay?

I just always assumed that the chickens lay their eggs in the morning. I guess that because you always heard of the farmer collecting eggs as part of his morning chores in storybooks.
The earliest that my girls will lay is 10am and I've collected them as late as 4pm. Is this normal or is it because I have birds that are farely new to laying?
Thanks for your advice!

My girls are still new at laying also, but I have gotten eggs as early as 9am and as late as 6pm. They all seem to want to use the same box too. It's really funny watching them wait in line.

In general, a hen lays an egg about every 25 hours. Therefore, if she laid at 9:00 today, she'd lay at 10:00 tomorrow, and etc. until she gets to the end of the day. Then she'd skip a day, resuming in the morning the day after.

However, since chickens can't tell time

each has her own schedule. I only have 3 girls and they're more pets than egg machines, so I've kept a calendar on them since they were little. All of them alter the time of day that they lay, but how many hours there are between eggs is different for each girl. Also, one of my girls rarely lays after noon, so if she lays at that time one day, I can be pretty sure she's going to skip the next day.

she seems to try several times till she succeeds. Yesterday I got a egg about 10 am, today when I went in at 12:30 she was sitting.

I'll chime in with my sample size of one chicken laying since a week ago. She has laid an egg each day for the last 7 days, all in the mid-morning. I keep thinking she is going to miss a day, but she hasn't yet.
