This little mix mutt hen we have is waiting until 1 to 1:30 in the afternoons! She climbs in her bucket and takes all the bedding out, drops the egg and then tries to roll it out. Luckily I put a 2x4 in front of the buckets so she can't get it very far. But at least she's laying in the buckets, I was afraid with them being strays for so long she'd continue to lay on the ground.

And of course the big roo has to be right next to her the entire time watching

Your little hen must be fairly close to a "24 hour layer." Not too many are that quick and will lay out a clutch on some other, longer schedule like 26 or 30 hours.

Laying occurs later and later until the event moves outside what poultry specialists call the "open period" so the hen needs to skip a day. She just wasn't ready to ovulate that late in the day and run thru that 24+ hour cycle. And, she won't ovulate until that other egg is "in the bucket."

The open period is about 8 hours long so if she will lay sometimes at 6 am then she isn't likely to lay after 2 pm as the clutch is produced. My guess is that your hen will skip a day at some point and then she will become an early morning layer.

It's only the real young pullets that can get their schedule completely out of wack.

My hens lay anywhere from 7:30 in the morning to 5 pm. I did notice a wild hen who layed 1 hr later each day in my yard. So I know they individual lay like Digits said. Gloria Jean

Oh good... I don't have a strange hen! I honestly don't remember how often or when the hens laid that we had so many years ago, had 2 degrees slammed into my brain since then, I guess I lost a bit of info!

I'm getting a kick out of this hen though, I hear just one really loud squawk even in the house. She barely makes a peep otherwise unless you try picking her up. And she's been mated so much by the monster roo that her tail leans to one side all the time.
Can't wait to get a few more girls!

Mine cycle thru the day. Early in the morning and then later and later until they take a day off and start again the next morning.
