my girls do not like being in the coop once the sun comes.
i'm usually out there within a couple of minutes of dawn, about 5:25 this time of year.
Sometimes I go back to bed, usually not.
I'm up at 5 every morning wether I'm working that day or not.
Everyone else in the house is still sleeping so it my only quiet time.
One I think it's bright enough I let them out. Right now it's usually 5:30 to 5:45. They can't wait for me to open the shoot for the run. Actually race
Since this is my busy work season (I'm a wildlife biologist)...DH opens the door at aroudn 0530....but unlike Gracefulspice's hens...mine just sit on the roost until they're darn ready to come out...usually by 6 or 630.
Yes Gracefulspice, I can so relate! I am up before 5 every morning, no exceptions. I have to wait a bit to let the chicks out because there are sometimes coyotes around. Right now it is around 6:15 to 6:30, depending on how bright or cloudy. The sun isn't up yet at that time here in our hollow. The race is really on then, see this post: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=10600

Close them up at 5? WOW don't they complain?
Not really. They never make a sound. They dig around in the litter for awhile then they go to sleep when it gets dark. Sometimes if I'm working in the workshop or garden I'll leave them out till 8 pm.
