Good morning everyone! I have six chicks and I am almost done with the build on my coop. I saw this discussion board because I was looking for what to use as lime for the coop and the run. Ultimately, I believe I have decided on barn lime with DE. I can’t really afford the other. What do you think?
I would also like to join in other discussions as well and learn from others that are more experienced.

Hi, and welcome to BYC! :frow

For many years, we've used DE in the coops for prevention of mites, in my parrot's cages for fruit flies, and around our house for the ants.

We use the First Saturday Lime in the woods in the swampy spots by the creek to kill mosquito larvae.

We're glad you're here!

I am referring to lime that keeps the odors away.
Removing as much of the poop load a day as you can and keeping things DRY keeps odors away. I have never used lime in my setup for over 7 years. I utilize poop boards that are sifted daily and clean the coop annually. The run has wood chips for litter and a solid pitched roof.
My BIL visited once and when he was in the coop had a surprised look on his face then confessed that he expected it to smell in the coop but it didn't. He said it just smells like animals, not poop.
