I still hope you pick Buff Orpingtons. They are by far, the MOST kid friendly and loveable breed out there! Great layers all winter (without any added light!) and a dual purpose Heritage breed. Best chickens EVER!!

If you want a dual purpose bird you should go with a black sex link , but we just just them for the eggs!!!!

Not that this will help, but I just ordered three more breeds to add to our flock of Light Brahmas. I like the LBs but we need more eggs and I'm huge on good dispositions for my sake. I added Black Jersey Giants, Black Australorps and Cuckoo Marans. All of these birds stay w/in our black and white theme (our dogs match, too), our climate, living situation and free ranging, egg production plus dispositions. I can't wait to get them. Good luck w/ your decision. It's a hard one. I asked for help, too!

Get Black Australorps they are very kid freindly I think they are the sweetest breed. You could always get more tan one breed right?
