What to do about heat source when we go to work?

For 8 years I have used a heat lamp. I left it on while I wasn’t home. This past week when I was surprised with ducklings, I decided to get a heat plate. I highly recommend a heat plate!

you can cheaply, quickly and easily make a MHP. just have to make sure to get a heating pad with out an auto shut off (I know Amazon has a bunch if you have prime can get it quick) then a cooling rack and attach it to that. They will go under it. Oh and bolts to hold it up. Look up MHP or mama heating pad on here for ideas. this is what I am doing from day 1 for fire hazard reasons plus closer to a mama hen.

At four weeks, they probably don't need much for heat, especially if they are still in the house.

I had a 1/4 inch hardware cloth cover with a 2x2 frame that fit over my brooder. The heat light was above the HWC. That helped ease the fear of the bulb falling into the brooder and prevented rambunctious chicks from flying up and hitting it. It also kept critters from getting into the brooder when it was in the barn. I'd show a picture, but I took it apart because it won't fit my new brooder, so now I need to make a new one.

I was just worried about fires when I’m not home to monitor

I have a brooder plate and a secondary heat lamp source with a 100w heat lamp. They also have plenty of room
To get away if they become to warm. I was worried about fire and set up a metal ladder to hold the lamp, next to brooder directed in a corner. I also used wire to secure the lamp as secondary protection. So far so good.
