I have a 9-month-old rooster and 5 hens. 4 of the 5 hens are losing feathers at the base of their tails. I do not suspect mites or lice because I do not see any creepy crawlies, the skin is not inflamed, all of them are missing feathers in the same spot and the 5th hen does not come into contact with the rooster, but she sleeps in the same hen house. The 5th hen sleeps in a closed off dog cage inside the hen house and is in a chick run with her chicks during the day, she has no feather loss. The ducks and goose also do not have any bald spots.
My birds free range during the day, so I don't think they're all that bored. A couple months ago, I had about 10 other hens, but they were killed off by a raccoon over the course of two weeks. Fortunately, it seems the hen house is now safe from raccoons.
The rooster is more eager than aggressive. I'm pretty sure that the rooster needs more hens and I currently have 17 chicks to join the flock, but it will be months until they will be of any use to the rooster. Is there anything I can do to help the hens with their feather loss? I highly doubt a couple of them will let me put a saddle on them.
