im getting chicks in july and then going to try to raise them with my broody hen by using her as a foster mother. We are going on vacation for a week in august so my chicks will be 1 month old by then. Will they be fine if i fill up the feeders and waterer and then have a neighbor open the coop up in the morning and shut it in the evening so they can be in their run during the day? do you think a 2 gallon waterer will stay fill for a week with 7 chickens?

no shes not even laying yet, so i know it probally isn't gonna work to have her raise the chicks

Do you think if i put the baby chicks in with two silkie hens in a large coop the hens would still attack the chciks or would the get along?

Its going to be a crap shoot on whether thay would be
Alright in with the silkies. I would say if you put the chicks
In with the silkies as soon as possible and they have had time
Together before you leave, chances are good they will
Be fine.

As for the water, there is no way that 2 gals will suffice for
7 birds for a week in August. They will probly need 3 times that amount
And even if it would last, should be changed out for fresh,
Clean water before it is used up. That will be the hotest
Time of the year and really need fresh water daily.

Hope you get it figured out what works best for you and
Your girls, and have fun on vacation.

The birds really need new water everyday, 2 days max. Otherwise it gets nasty and they wont drink it. You can get a large feeder, or fill up several bowls. That should work for the feed.

ok i can just get my neighbor to fill it up
