what to do? egg pipped over 12 hours ago but no progress

My first eg pipped right on time almost to the exact min from when I sett 21 days ago. Its been a little over 12 hours and no progress. I heard it peeping all night but now its not. I hear it pecking but no more of the shell is breaking. The inner lining if the shell from where a piece of shell broke off is very rubbery. Do you think it is having a hard time getting through the membrane? I will be at work for the next 10-12 hours so when I get home it will be past 24 hours. I have the humidity at 69%-70% is there anything I should do or wait til I get home and see if any progress is made and if no progress and its still alive what should I do then? This is my first hatch and my first egg so I will be heartbroken to come all this way and not have it survive.

Don't help and don't open the incubator. It probably pipped before it was ready to hatch and is still absorbing the yoke. It is not uncommon for it to take over 24 hours for them to hatch after they pip. DO NOT open the incubator because this will cause the humidity to drop and the chick will stick to the shell and never be able to get out. Good luck.

I have had to open the incubator to add water. I have a crappy Styrofoam and have had to add water once or twice a day to keep humidity up. Even though I have a sopping sponge in there. I have 3 humidity gauges. One that's a dial and 2 digital and 5 or 6 thermometers. 2 digital and 3 or 4 glass. I know it seems like over kill I just wanted to make sure the T-Mobile was 99.5 and humidity was correct. Any suggestions on what to do since I opened the incubator and how to keep the humidity up? I will now definitely be investing in something all digital with a humidity pump

No, you don't have to open the incubator to add water at this point. You will do more harm than good because any moisture that has evaporated from your sponge will be lost. The new water you add will take time to evaporate and become part of the measured humidity in the incubator. As others have posted, just leave it be and let those chicks do their thing. I see a lot of posts on this forum where people fret, fret, fret about humidity levels being exact and it just leads to unnecessary intervention. Have confidence- your chicks will be fine!

Most of my chicks seem to take 18-24 hours from pip to hatch. They need the time to absorb the blood and yolk - if you help it out you could burst a blood vessel and kill the chick. Don't worry, give it time. It will hatch when its ready.

Just keep waiting. I had one pipped in the wrong end of the egg yesterday for 24 hours before it finally hatched. It was KILLING ME to not help it out, but I have helped a few, some have lived, and some haven't. Its hard, and I've finally taken the advice of the BYC'rs let nature take its course. There is nothing worse than helping one out, then ending up having its legs bad, and ends up dying. Really sad. So yeah, just let it be!

Good news I got back from dropping my little one at school and it made some good progress and it looks like the membrane soften, So no more touching!!! lol i'm waiting for my husband to get home and tell me if its completely hatched! Then i guess i have to wait some more til he/she dries so i can put it in the brooder. lol

Even after he/she dries, you don't want to open the incubator. You will compromise the other unhatched eggs. They have enough food from birth to leave them for 24-48 hours after they hatch. Its ok without food and water til then.

Well so far so good. My lovely husband took it out and put it in the brooder while I was at work (he was yelled at) I had another pip after that. They were not all set on the same day. 2 where set one day 1 a few days later and 2 a few days after that. I was mostly just checking for fertility. Only 1 of them sosnt take. Well that I know of. 3 are olive egger eggs and I can't tell if they are still good. I ordered a stronger candler. I saw some veining in the beginning but now I can't see anything but the air sac..thanks for all your help!!
