What to do to keep my flock safe during Hurricane Florence?

As the title says, hurricane Florence is coming, and I want to know what precautions to take to keep my chickens sage. Should I keep them locked up during the event? Or is that even more dangerous?

That depends on how close to the coast you are, your elevation (flood danger) and if your coops are wind proof.

I don't intend to do anything differently than I normally do. Let'em out of the run about 9:30AM and close the run up after they've gone to roost------unless it's raining so hard that I just don't feel like going out to the coop/run.

Well, we are well prepared. Our backyard has a tendency to flood, but, we aren't near the coast, about halfway in NC really. However, their coop is basically a barn, and they free range. I'm just trying to make sure I do everything in my power to ensure the animals under my protection are as well protected as can be against this. Again, my family and I will be fine, we have plenty of food and water and we know some people out of state if it comes to that, but I doubt it will.

I would take extra precautions to keep feed dry and elevated if you can. Event you have coming I suspect is well outside your experience.


When it previously flooded, was is deep and did it get into barn?

Things turned out good. Their coop withstood the wind well, and, because Florence turned we only got minimal flooding and some strong winds. They ended up with a muddy floor and wet hay, so we had to relay and add some drying material to it. But, everyone is safe and happy. Thanks for asking!
