What to do when it's too hot for chicks outside?

Well, I hear your concern. Your not going to believe this, but, my Housemate said.. "It is to hot for them chickens, so he put in a window A/C keeps the Coop at 86 degrees, and let me tell you, the girls will go inside when it it to hot for them!!! They Love it!

I can only imagine what by Electric Billl is going to be!

I have this concern too. I should get my chicks in the mail the last week of June. My new chicken house will be done by then and I thought I would keep them in the house, in a smaller brooding area. Yesterday it was 104!! There is no way I will need a heat lamp, except at night when the temp goes into the 70's.

I am seriously thinking of keeping them in the house at least until they get their feathers.

Hi everyone from South Louisiana where we reached 103 and hovered around 100 for the past several days! And I dont even want to talk about the humidity! Lol... I just wanted to share somethings that I have been doing, even though putting in an a/c seams a bit much to me, I started by putting in a fan

Then I give my chickens fresh water with frozen coke bottles in them, trust me they come running when they see me fixing them some ice cold water. I also set out frozen jugs of water where they dust bathe. They huddle right next to it.

I put them out around 8 am and swap them out (as well as fresh water again) at around 4-4:30 when I get home.
I also put frozen bottles in a extra large plant base.

I also let them free range as soon as I get home and I spray the yard down with the hose. My chickens don't like being sprayed & they are scared of the sprinkler (I tried), but they like wet grass and dirt, they will find a cool place to hang out.

Good luck to everyone and their flocks in this heat

Im from Louisiana too. My back yard is nice and shady but it is still hot for them. I spray the yard with the water hose and they take mud baths.

They take refuge under my atv and the oak tree.

I keep them supplied with fresh cool water from the spigot

They have a nice shady spot to dust bathe

I moved my 3 week old chicks to the wire so they could get some air circulation. It was too darned hot in the shop even with the fan.

So far they are doing OK. If they start looking distressed, I will try the frozen bottles, the mister or other means of keeping them cool.
