What to do when the girls first arrive....

So this may be a silly question, but I can't seem to find the answer here on the forum. My girls (15-20 week old started Australorp pullets) are due to arrive home early June. We will have the coop and run finished and secure by the time they get here.

But what do I do the very first day I get them? Do I just put them in their run? I've read threads about baby chicks, where you need to dip their beaks in food and water to teach them, but what about nearly grown hens? Will they find their food and water just fine?I'm planning on using PVC feeders and waterers in the run only. Should I leave them alone to settle in or spend time with them?

You can put them right in the coop. you shouldn't have to dip their beaks in water, they should know what the feeders and waterers look like. It's up to you if you want to leave them alone or not but anytime I get new chickens I always spend time with them while they're adjusting. They should all be okay but it's always fun to watch new birds.

Thanks for the reply!! I guess I just needed to hear from someone else that they will be fine and be able to find their food and water....I've yet to have a pet that will starve itself if food and water is available....I figured they aren't complicated...but I've never had chickens before.

Any other questions, don't be afraid to ask. We were all new chicken owners at one point and there's a lot of people willing to help.

I'd just put them in and leave them alone for a while. Let them settle in without stressing them more by crowding them. Keep an eye on them but keep your distance.

Thank you donrae for the advice...I will probably just put them in their pen and check up on them throughout the day....and I'll have to try hard not to over-worry about them.
