No, right now the chickens all free-range all the time. I'm working on making tractors for my 'breeders', but money is very tight right now.
I do go and love on her everyday, check her water and feed her twice a day. I try to take her 'off-leash' at least once a week into the government land next door, so she can run to her heart's content. But sometimes that's not possible.

So this is my story and I dont know if it will help, but maybe.......

I got this BEAUTIFUL dog from the pound in December. I went there looking, and saw this sweet blue merle Shepherd cross.

Think part heeler maybe. Well, we visited him for a minute, and he seems just the right amount of submissive and had some manners. Im very firm and dominant with my dogs and they follow me everywhere like my little pack. I can usually give commands with a look. Guess it comes with owning a zoo for my whole life.

Anyway, long story short, he was killing my chickens and would not listen to me yelling once he gave chase. I caught him in the act and pinned him down yelling NO! and then would catch the chicken that he was chasing and would put it in front of his face Telling him NO!! NO!! until he submitted and was relaxed. I would let him get up and grab a chicken and come to him with it and if he got excited I would pin him down with the chicken by his face until he was relaxed and uninterested again. It didnt help.
Then I got home one day and he had killed my only female guinea and my favorite tame black star hen (all the big birds are free range). The black star was still alive, missing skin and most of her feathers. I had to finish her. Then I took her body and beat the crap out of the dog with her. I heard from an old farmer to tie dead chickens to the dog and let them rot off and that they would never touch a chicken again. Well.....I was out of ideas so---I tried it. I took some haystring and tied the dead birds close to his collar. I left him outside in the weather like that for three days. It was getting pretty gross and he looked REALLY remorseful. On the third day I cut them off and burned them and gave him a good bath. He wont even LOOK at a chicken now and wont even go in the building/coop. They are all still free range with the coop door open all summer and I haven't had a problem since then. If I pick up a chicken he looks away and lays down. I didn't think this would work when I heard of it, but maybe it will help! I can understand if you think its gross, but I was at the last straw....and it worked for us!
ALSO--I tried the 10x10 chain link dog kennel and he DESTROYED it. Dug and pulled and put big holes in the chain link. He only weighs 40 lbs, but it was enough I guess. I even reinforced it with hardwire cloth around the bottom and he tore it off.

Shelleyd,...I also have 3 outside dogs and two of them are chained. My dogs don't like the chickens either, especially one. She is a labrador retriever. We had to buy her a chain link kennel to keep her in, it is a 10'x12' and 6' tall,...the chickens free range during the day and she runs loose at night outside by herself unsupervised. My dogs that are outside is just that, guard dogs. They are part of the family, we are always outdoors and they get plenty of attention. They are fed and watered and have great housing. Many people have different opinions on how to "keep" a dog. I will shut up now before I say something that may upset someone.

Hikerchick, she's asking for help, not negativity.

ShelleyD, the only thing I can think of is trying to train her not to attack the chickens. Try walking her (on a leash, of course!) near the chickens, telling her "NO!" whenever she starts to jump/attack. I don't know if it will work, but it's worth a shot.

With my dog, it sometimes helps to take her near the item (whether it's a shoe or duck or whatever) and tell her in a firm voice, "that is a NO," while pointing at the item. I keep repeating myself, and I make sure she's looking at the item while I'm telling her no.

I'm no dog trainer, so I can't guarantee that what works for me will work for you. Some people reading this probably think I'm nuts after reading that.

Good luck!

It would be ever so helpful if at the beginning of each thread people would make a list of acceptable opinons.

It would save you all from having to be nasty and sarcastic.

You are right .Your way is the only way. Everyone else is an idiot.

Feel better?

Dogs are not the same as goats, chickens, etc. While it may be necessary to keep him outside, tying a dog will spoil his temperament. Once he has killed chickens, he isn't likely to stop without intense training and constant supervision. You can confine him or the chickens; a physical barrier is your only hope. Maybe re-homing him with someone in a nearby town who doesn't have chickens? I understand living in an area where good homes are hard to find. We don't have a shelter here, either. I've driven the 160 miles round trip several times to take an abandoned dog to the Humane Society.

Just want to say that you dont need money for tractors...we have a whole 'tractor park' built out of wood and wire we got for free! You just have to search Craigslist everyday and see if you can find a "Yahoo! Freecycle" group in your area! I need to post a pic of all the tractors, but the materials were free on all but one of them!
