what to do with problematic rooster

his behavior around the hens I'm getting a little fed up with him.
I'm fed up with him just reading this!
The crying child would have decided his fate with me imediately.
Having 50 years of chicken ownership under my belt has taught me some things. Nicely behaved roosters are culled every day. It's not necessary to keep a bad one.

Pretty 'easy' decision, IMO.

Your adult rooster would be gone here too!
The cockerel may be wonderful, or not, and I'd give him a chance to be terrific, with daddy gone.
My youngsters are raised with the adults, in an 'all one flock' approach. The roosters and hens help civilize the cockerels, and only individuals who can get along get to stay. I've never separated cockerels for months to help them get better behaved!
Children are much more likely to be attacked, but that doesn't make it better, IMO.

I'm sorry, but small children should not be allowed to mingle with a flock of chickens with a rooster. The rooster was doing what roosters do, protecting his ladies. The rooster is still young and will likely settle down with age. Try separating him from the flock to give him some time to mature and let his youthful hormones settle down. As far as consensual sex with the hens? Projecting human emotions onto an animal may sound nice, but let's get real, these are animals doing what they were bred for and just doing their job. Just MHO.
