I just read a post that suggested to crack open any unhatched eggs to "see why they did not hatch". Is this really worth while, or should I just leave well enough alone and be happy with my success from my first hatch? What would I look for if I did crack them open?

That is what I planned to do (toss them, I'm not emotionally attached to the eggs). But when I ran across the post that suggested opening them to see why they didn't hatch I thought maybe I missed something potentially important.

If you look in the Incubating section I posted pictures, I'm the proud papa of 7 (out of the 10 that I started with) If I would have cracked them at day 22 I would have only had 5, so I'm glad I waited. What do you do with the ones you open?

I crack them all open to see what developed and take note of how far they got in development. That way you can better trouble shoot what went wrong. In addition, if the chicks that don't hatch are from a specific bird, you can not set those in the future as their viability is low. After you open and observe, then just toss in the trash or bury.

Well, I have one from each of my hens that did not hatch, at day 18, they all had movement and seemed to be fully developed when I candled them. So I think I will spare myself the cracking this time. I was hoping for 6 out of 10 for my first try, and I got 7, so I am pretty happy!! I just wanted to make sure there wasn't something else I was suppose to look for.

I never give up on them til after day 25...I use to crack them open but I don't even want to look anymore....I just dispose of them in the burn pile ring....
