I have a little roo 5 weeks old that I need to go away. I have him listed in the auction section (free) but that is not working out. He is a MEAN lil' bugger. Do I cull? What would you do??

I probably would but that's what I plan on doing with any roo.../bump!

if he is a heavier breed, list him on craigslist, but mention that he is not a good "flock" roo... someone might take him off your hands.

Since he is "mean" he may not be desirable to keep in a backyard flock. I can't believe that no one wants him to butcher! We have a friend that takes his roosters to a zoo. They use them to feed to animals. I can't bear to think about it, but then again, I don't have a "mean rooster" to get rid of.

At five weeks old it is impossible to determine how good a "flock rooster" a chick will become. For now seperate him from the chicks he is bullying and try to give him away through CL. No need to tolerate his aggravation. Chickens are supposed to be enjoyed.

Is this your only rooster? If so, I'd let him grow up a little before you decide to haul him off. He may improve and turn out to be a good protector for his girls. If he's a second rooster on that small of a flock, I would pen him separately until he reaches at least 5 months or a nice size, then cull him. Bad roosters make good chicken and dumplings!

ETA: Do you live within city limits or a community that won't allow roosters? Now that would be a problem...you couldn't probably get away with keeping him to eating size. Hmm.....
