What to do with those old shavings?

Quote:
woody materials break down much more slowly than plant matter like grass clippings, fruits and veggies, etc., thus the reason i don't want to put them in the compost pile; however, if they do break quickly, then i'll give it a shot in the compost pile.

Ahh, gotcha. I thought you meant composting general takes too long.

Thick pieces of woody material can take a long time to break down, but pine shavings are almost paper thin and can be mixed into your existing compost materials very thoroughly to speed the process.

I pulled the wood shavings out of the coop and spread it into the run about a month ago, the shavings are starting to break down, this weekend I'm going to rake them up and put them into my raised beds, we've had lots of rain so the "poop" has broken down. I've put shavings into gardens in the past and it really loosens up the soil and makes it very fluffy, and my plants have really benefited from it, much more so than fertilizer, can't wait for those juicy tomatos!

I saw an ad on our area's Craigslist that was offering chicken manure for $1 per gallon.

... and to think I just spread mine out in the field.
