I don't change my waterers when I have chicks that are hen brooded. She's there to help the chicks out if needed, but I have never had a chick drown in a normal waterer. The biggest danger is when they are under 72 hours and still a bit uncoordinated.

I just use the waterers that have a quart jar screw on the base. Never had a chick drown. I used an adult waterer once, but I put rocks in the bottom so they could easily get out if they fell in.
