We are starting about 20 chicks in 2 weeks.
likely 10 one week and 10 the following week we are not sure.

Is there chicken math for how many will be Roos? šŸ˜‚

Our Farm and Garden store buys from Hoover, McMurray, Cackle and a few others I didnā€™t know off hand.

90% hens so expect maybe 4 Roos per 20 chicks?? More or less depending on these breeds . . .

Breeds are 4 Orps, 4 EE, 3 Midnight Marans, 3 Prairie BB, 2 Light Brahma, 3 Faverolle, 2 BLRW.

If all are straight run, average is 1 male per female.

If all are supposed to be pullets, likelihood is 2
Like Jacin said, straight run average at half and half.
Usually big stores order pullets but there's always that chance of getting a misidentification or two. We got six pullet chicks three years ago and ended up with a cockerel, but that's not too bad.

A friend thinks out of her 8 pullets (for one breed, the others were all girls so far) she got 2 or 3 males

Out of 3 pullets from a different order, I have 1 that is almost certainly a male and another that may or may not be. But I purposely picked out one that I was certain was a male too in that trio
