Now don't take it the wrong way. I'm just yankin your chain a bit.
In my observations, I noticed that chickens do know what to eat and what to avoid. Tomato foliage for one. Another plant is Deadly Nightshade, a weed that grows in my fence. Tomato, and potatoes are also part of the Nightshade Family, as well as petunias.
I don't grow potatoes, but the others mentioned I do have. I do not see my chickens making any attempts to wolf down any of those greens. Maybe they took a nibble and tasted something that they did not want any more of...
They go about free-range scratching, and making their own choices.
I guess if the poisonous item was the only thing on the menu, they may react differently.
