What to feed chickens to lay more eggs.

so do i mix laying pellets with grower pellets ?

Huh? I guess I don't understand. Grower feed until they start laying, then layer feed.

I agree about the light on it makes them lay better and seems to help with the garments too

I liked the typo: reminded me of getting to work with shirt on backwards, or inside out, or mismatched socks from getting dressed in the dark! I am picturing your hens under a sparkling chandelier picking out their clothes for the day!

sorry mac like i mentioned im reallll new at this my chicks are on chick starter didnt know that feed would start them laying then switch to layer feed im told to keep them on chick starter for 16 weeks

No problem. Are there any recommendations on your feed bags? Depending on the company they may sell fewer or more types of feed for different stages of growth. Some may sell a starter/grower for 0-20 weeks, others may sell a medicated starter and then recommend switching to their grower feed after a certain number of weeks until they start to lay.

I just looked at the website for our local mill and they sell a 20% chick starter for 0-6 weeks and then recommend an 18% grower until lay. Other companies may sell a general purpose starter/grower for the entire period. It depends upon what is available to you.

no recommendations just plain brown bag from feed store where i bought chicks at 3 weeks old they are pretty happy and content my brooder box is 2' high and today my wife said a couple of them are flying out lol they are in my utility room in a 3'x4'x2' high carboard box dont know if they can stand another 3 weeks in there but i do have a seperate door to utility room they are eating and growing like crazy now

i will call feed store tomorrow and find out what type of starter feed i have and what percentage the protein is but she told me today to feed them the same feed i have for 4 months

Fun stuff. I started hanging out here seven years ago when we first bought 15 chicks and raised them on our back porch/backyard in West Texas. A few years later I ended up buying a small farm in Wisconsin with a large hen house. Now we have two hen houses with 2500 hens in each and we are selling about $225,000 of organic eggs each year.

Fresh eggs are always good. You wouldn't believe how many I eat each week. There's no shortage of them here, close to 400 dozen each day. Even if we haven't made it to the grocery store, there's always eggs to eat. One of my neighbors was going on and on today about our eggs. She said they'll never buy regular white eggs ever again, our eggs are like crack.
