I going to get hens and a rooster and I hear that letting the rooster eat the layer feed is bad for his kidneys so what am I supposed to feed them?

Feed them starter feed or all flock. and provide your chickens oyster shells free choice. Easiest solution and healthy kidneys. Starter has about 2% calcium. Layer has about 4%. I think all flock might be about 1. 4% It may vary slightly by different suppliers. These numbers are approximate and of the top of my head. I didn't feel like running out to my coop and reading the bag. Besides. I'M afraid of the dark.

My roosters eat layer food but also forage a lot, so I think this helps them balance it out. They also don't eat quite as much, to my knowledge, because they don't have to lay eggs.

If you are worried about your rooster getting kidney problems, you can switch them all to a normal (non-layer) ration and offer calcium in the form of oyster shells to the hens.

Best of luck!
