Okay, I went to the other feed store and found a developer feed. I spoke briefly with my crack, er chicken supplier
who told me to start adding cracked corn and wheat to the mix to extend the feed and give them more variety. I hear there's a grain supplier in the Bitterroot that sells an inexpensive layer pellet that she uses that costs reasonable when the time comes. She also recommends adding extra grains to their food as well.
I gave the chicks some whole wheat as a snack and they gobbled it up along with the developer feed. I think because the feed comes from North Dakota, it's a bit fresher (we're in Montana).
Thanks for all the info. As usual, you guys are the best. acid_chipmunk, I'll keep an eye on them and make sure that if I see picking to up the protein in their ration. I believe the wheat will do that anyway.
