What to look for in Sussex

Here are the hens in question..... I was just wondering I read that Speckleds arent really up to the SOP but I was just seeing. I also read that sussex should have a nice rectangled shape body, and should be big. I als read that the Speckleds are supposed to have white and black on every feather.

I like the first one from the left and the last one on the right

I have also been looking for this information. It would appear that Speckled Sussex are popular in the US as a backyard pet, but are not common in shows as the configuration is so hard to match. It may be hard for us to find help.

The APA standard picture I have seen show an even distribution of speckles over the body, with defined lines of speckles on the wings similar to what your hen who is profile in the picture has.

We would need to get a APA SOP and read through the description, and check each trait as we go.

It might be easiest to take them to a local show and get a judge's opinion. Just remember there are many judges and they will not all think alike, but a good one should be able to point out the any disqualifying traits.

I too like the back left hen! I am very interested in these birds also. I started my "in person" investigations at the KY State fair show. Talked with a fellow who had won with his 2 birds...Walt Reicheit is his name and he is in Simpsonville Ky. Then went to Ohio National show in Columbus. The only Sussex there in the Open class(not youth) was Walts.....and to think Sussex are a dime a dozen in Canada! Im really not interested in showing(years of horse showing!..been there!) but I am intersted in getting a few nice looking birds. If you get some birds that don't cut the show mustard...I would be interested!Let me know!(I have to see where in Indiana you are now)

I've done horse show and goat shows and those aren't nearly as hard as this chicken thing!! LOL i was reading somewhere (i think i already said this) that they are suppose to have a rectangled shape body and a black speck and a white speck for every feather, but i think it might be different for roosters but my rooster has some comb issues so hes not going to show. I think im going to take the hen that is staring at us to a youth open show in april. We will see how she does. I've been tossing around taking an ameraucana but i doubt i do.

Hopefully someone will answer, but if not in a couple of weeks i will answer the question for us

Speckled Sussex are HARD.

Theoretically speaking, each feather should have a white "tip" on it. Even the photo posted above doesn't have each feather tipped with white. Some judges vary in their decisions...some would say the female has too much white on her body, others want more white...some vary on the shade of mahogany...it's one of the most difficult colors out there. At least, in my opinion.

my son showed speckled sussex. And I agree, the one on the far left looks the best. You want them to have a good all over speckled pattern. You don't want it to be speckled in some spots and not others. Good Luck

In every other breed i have except the sussex and the seramas im doing BBS because that is the easiest.... so i guess one or two challenges shouldn't be all that bad.

what are the bodies suppose to be like in sussex in general?
