What to look for in Sussex

You've achieved the "perfect" lacing on the blue feathers?

Well of course not silly!!! LOL i just mean its not quite as hard to get a nicely laced blue bird compared to getting a nice speckled sussex. Has anyone ever bred a "perfectly" laced bird. What I meant was that it isnt quite the challenge. I didnt mean to step on any toes! Just asking questions and learning more about this thing I've taken on. Sorry if I offenened anyone that solely breeds BBS birds.

I wasn't exactly offended...just wanted to see birds that had really good lacing. Blues are really hard, especially in birds where blues are hard to get ahold of.

Speckled's are hard mainly because of the judges opinions....they are GORGEOUS, but very hard.

have a look at this Aussie forum, they know what to look for, just remember type is as important, if not more important than how the bird is painted.

and while your there, have a look around for light sussex threads, there is a ton of great tips there for the sussex breed in general

but your chooks look lovely, i like the one on the right. (remember mottling increases with age so as pullets they should be medium speckeled), good strength but if you can select away from U backed birds that would really improve type even more
